Learning to Deny the ‘Shiny Wrappers’

What is contentment? Is it actually possible? What does it look like (and not look like)? These are questions I have always wanted to dig deeper into. Who doesn’t want to know how to feel more constantly at peace and more consistently content? So, as a result, I have started reading Erik Raymond’s book Chasing Contentment. In this work, he leans on the Bible and other impactful church thinkers to help us see what contentment is…
In the first post about this, I explained how I was graced by God to diligently read 100 books in 2017. And then I listed the 100 books, with some statistics about my reading. Then in the second post, I chose the books I liked most in different categories. In this final post, I want to detail out nine benefits and four downsides I found as I read 100 books. I do this to meditate on the experience, especially since I might not ever do it again (at least not in 2018!)…

In the next post, I will give 9 benefits and 4 downsides I found while doing it. I also will answer if I will do it again. But in this post, I want to give my favorite books I read this year…
In the year 2017, I set a challenge for myself which, by God’s grace, I was able to accomplish. I read 100 books in the year. This averaged to around eight books a month. Through it all, I was able to read way more than I ever thought I could, and now reading has become more of an enjoyable habit than it ever has been…
After reading Edward’s Freedom of the Will this morning, I see that everything has a cause. All things are chains of effects from the millions of causes. This means 1) my Will is not self-determining; 2) I am a chain of thousands upon thousands of causes and effects…
The other day I was looking through Spotify for different versions of the Christmas song “O Holy Night.” It is one of my favorite songs of the season because I love that high and beautiful note at the end (“O night, divine…”). I was exploring for more recordings to hear different artists sing the song and belt the note…
*Article originally published on Desiring God. “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). In the current technological world, these famous words by the apostle Paul are becoming increasingly difficult to follow. Sight has always been one of humanity’s primary senses. But now, in the age of colorful screens constantly vying for our attention, it is becoming tougher and tougher to trust in what we cannot see and walk by faith. It is a battle we each fight every day…
When the apostle John urged his readers, “Do not love the world or the things of the world” (1 John 2:15), he was not being legalistic, or a crotchety old man focused only on morals, or a negative Nancy. Rather, he was caring for those he was writing to. And God, through him, was loving us…
Jonathan Leeman, in his book Church Membership, explains the biblical principles concerning church membership and how they apply to different settings (I heartedly recommend the book on the subject). At one point, he describes how although churches may be in different areas, they each are under enemy attack…
